NTG’s M&A Roadmap: What’s Next?

road capacity

NTG (Nordic Transport Group) has made substantial progress in the logistics sector, especially in road freight, through a series of targeted acquisitions. From 2016 to 2024, the company completed 15 acquisitions, all focused on enhancing its presence in road freight. Recent strategic actions, such as acquiring Thortrans, Schenker Italiana’s land-based furniture logistics operations, and RTC, underscore NTG’s dedication to establishing itself as a key player in the European furniture logistics market. By incorporating Schenker Italiana’s operations into its existing furniture division, NTG strengthens its position in the high-demand furniture and home interiors market.

According to the Centre for Industrial Studies, the European retail furniture market is valued €165bn, which explains the forwarder’s strong interest in developing its expertise in the European furniture logistics sector. Both Schenker Italiana and NTG’s furniture subsidiary, LGT Logistics, are members of the MACH-3000 alliance, which enhances their ability to provide comprehensive pan-European coverage.

In a related move, NTG acquired RTC Transport (RTC), a Danish specialist in home deliveries of furniture and domestic appliances. With a strong presence in Denmark and a growing footprint in southern Sweden, RTC enhances NTG’s ability to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end service package for furniture and home interior manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.

Commenting on the acquisition of Thortrans in November 2024, Jesper Petersen, CEO of Road & Logistics at NTG, highlighted that the integration of Thortrans is expected to generate an additional DKK 120m in revenue for LGT over the next 12 months.

Despite challenges such as increased haulier costs and high competition, NTG’s strategic acquisitions have driven organic growth and expanded its customer base. The company’s Q3 2024 results reflect this growth, with a 6.8% increase in revenues compared to the same period in 2023, driven by both organic growth and the RTC acquisition. NTG’s strategic focus on acquisitions will remain a cornerstone of its future growth, with the company continuing to search for new opportunities to create value and expand its footprint in Europe’s competitive logistics market.
