Ocean Freight Tracker – A steady drop back down for Global Ocean Rates

Global Ocean Freight rates remain on a generally downward trend, however their journey back down looks set to be slower than their ascent.  The Global head haul index now sits at 241.1 in February 2025 whilst the backhaul sits at 97.4.

Headhaul rates remain elevated, up +22.0 points vs February 2024, a time when rates has already been pushed up by red sea disruptions. However consistent rate falls have seen the index fall significantly from it’s peak of 352.3 in July 2024 (-111.4 points).

The rate of fall has slowed considerably in recent months. Headhaul rates have fallen an average of -5.0 points per months in the 3 months prior to February 2024, this is in contrast to a -29.0 points in the months before that. Whilst some of this can be attributed to rate rises in January 2024 it still points towards smaller monthly rate falls in the first half 2025 which will in turn keep rates elevated.  In addition Headhual rates remain elevated, up +22.0 points vs February 2024, a time when rates has already been pushed up by red sea disruptions.
